Which Celebrity Weight Loss Diets Really Work?

The popularity of reality television shows such as The Biggest Loser has created a new niche in the weight loss and fitness market: celebrity weight loss diets. It seems that every time you turn on the TV or read a magazine, there's an ad promising you a perfect body if you just invest in the system. Plans offer “industry secrets” and “specially-formulated” supplements to get you to buy them, but do they really work? The answer depends on the plan and what it entails.

Celebrity Juice Cleansing Diet Plans

There are several celebrity weight loss diets that tell you that in order to get the body that you've always wanted, you need to cleanse your system. Juice cleansing has been around for ages and is embraced by people who believe that by drinking nothing but fresh fruit and vegetable juices for several days or months, you can detoxify your body and stimulate weight loss.  Some plans combine the juice cleanse with supplements, herbal teas and enemas in order to boost the power of the cleanse but there is no scientific research that validates this method as a viable, healthy way to lose weight.

If you choose to follow these types of celebrity weight loss diets, it's probable that you will lose weight because most of the plans restrict caloric intake to about 1200 calories per day. However, as soon as you start eating regular food again, you will most likely gain that weight back. There are also several undesirable side-effects that accompany juice cleanses including bloating, dizziness, bad breath, body odor, constipation, nausea and fatigue. Most health professionals strongly advise against using enemas because you are disrupting the levels of good bacteria in your bowels that your body needs to fight infections. In addition, there is a risk of tissue damage that can cause serious health issues.

There are, however, a few of the cleansing diets that incorporate one solid meal per day into the plan and those may be healthier and easier to follow than those that deprive you of solid foods altogether. These plans also tend to be of shorter duration so that makes it more likely that you will actually stick with them. The final word? Stay away from anything that recommends enemas or restricts you to less than 1200 calories per day.

Celebrity Weigh Loss Pills

There are a number of celebrity weight loss diets that incorporate the use of pills in order to help you drop the pounds. Some of them are herbal blends that tout detoxification properties and others claim that they will burn calories, block fat or increase your metabolism. There are two very important things to remember here; just because there's a celebrity's face on the box doesn't mean that the product is endorsed by that celebrity, and even if it is, that's not proof that the pills are safe.

There are a number of reputable products that are endorsed by celebrities and actually do what they claim when used as indicated but as with all weight loss pills, take the time to read the ingredients and understand what the risks are before you take them. Side effects of weight loss pills can include everything from mild nausea and nervousness to heart attacks and death so this is no time to buy something just because there's a beautiful, thin celebrity smiling at you on the box.

Celebrity Weight Loss Diet Plans

Many celebrities have paired with well-known weight loss giants in order to endorse a plan that promotes weight loss via meal planning. Weight Watchers has most recently promoted their program with the help of the beautiful and shapely Jenny McCarthy and has a long history of working with mega-stars including Kirstie Alley and Jennifer Hudson. Other weight loss gurus have embraced the idea as well; NutriSystem has paired up with Tori Spelling to promote their program, Queen Latifa actively promotes Jenny Craig and Jennifer Anniston attributes her weight loss to The Zone Diet.

The one thing that many of these plans have in common is that they encourage followers to eat a healthy diet and incorporate exercise. These groups offer a wide variety of products including support groups, calorie counters, meal plans and actual meal delivery. Many of them also have products that you may purchase at the grocery store such as snack bars and frozen meals that help you stay on track. As with any other diet, don't let a pretty face keep you from researching the health benefits of the plan.

Extreme Workouts and Celebrity Bootcamps

This is probably the weight loss niche that has received the most exposure due to the popularity of reality television shows. Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper, trainers on the wildly popular TV show The Biggest Loser, have both jumped on the celebrity weight loss diet bandwagon to promote aggressive ways to lose weight. These include bootcamp-style workout programs paired with low-fat, reduced calorie diets that claim to produce huge results. The effectiveness of some of the programs are proven but because of the extreme nature of many of these plans, it's a good idea to consult a doctor prior to starting them.

How to Choose a Celebrity Weight Loss Diet

Because of the overwhelming number of celebrity weight loss diets, it's difficult to decide which one to choose. Most of us would be satisfied to look as good as any of the celebrities do, so how do you decide which plan is the best? You need to determine your weight loss goals, then decide which method you are most ready to embrace.

If you are ready (and healthy enough) to commit to the rigorous exercise and significant diet restrictions of a bootcamp-style program, then maybe it would work for you. If you'd like to have a support system and meals delivered to your home to take the aggravation out of counting calories, then check into those kinds of programs. Whatever you decide to do, educate yourself on the benefits and health risks of a plan before investing your time and money.
