The internet has made everything available to us with just the click of a mouse. It’s not surprising that there are thousands of websites touting one weight loss diet plan or another. Someone looking for a little help losing weight is sure to find something they can use. The downside to this is that there are so many plans to choose from, all of them claiming to be the best. How do you know which one is best for you? There are several criteria you can look at when trying to decide.
Does it Fit into Your Lifestyle?
The best diet in the world will do you no good if you won’t stay on it. The best weight loss diet plan has to suit your personality and lifestyle.
If a diet plan requires you to cook specific meals every day, following a strict menu, this may not work for you. If a plan calls for you to have grilled salmon and a spinach salad for dinner, but you don’t like salmon, are you more likely to substitute tuna or to just eat that spaghetti you fixed for the kids? What if you don’t cook at home very much? Or what if you just don’t like being told exactly what to eat at every meal?
Many people prefer to have a list of foods they can eat, a list of food they cannot and some guidelines. This is also a much simpler way to go. If you don’t like having your every meal dictated to you, or if your schedule is very changeable, a diet plan with a specific menu is not likely to work for you.
If a plan requires you to eat in a way that doesn’t suit you or that you can’t realistically expect to follow, it’s also not going to work for you. If a weight loss diet plan requires you to eat only raw foods, eat exotic foods that are unavailable or unfamiliar, or eat only shakes and smoothies, is this a workable plan for you? Will you really run to three different gourmet or health food stores?
You want to make healthy changes to your lifestyle, but a diet plan that requires you to change your lifestyle altogether is not one you’ll stick to for very long. You need a plan you can keep long term, not only to reach your weight loss goals, but to keep that weight off for good.
Do You Have Time for This Diet Plan?
Many weight loss diet plans turn out to be a part time job. Do you have time in your busy life for a part time job? If not, skip the diets that require a lot of work.
Constant weighing, portioning, pre-packaging, food prep and journaling can suck up a great deal of time in your day. If you don’t have the time (or the patience) to spend performing all the tasks a diet plan asks you to do, it’s not a workable plan for you.
A really effective diet plan doesn’t require a lot of paperwork or planning. While you may need to spend some time each week planning your meals and your shopping, you shouldn’t have to spend several hours a week tracking each carbohydrate gram or measuring out walnuts. Few people will stick with this kind of program. Those who do are often not following it to the letter, so they fail to see the results they were hoping for
Can You Afford What the Diet Plan Really Costs?
The price of a book, e-book or monthly membership may not be the total cost of the diet plan you’re considering. While you should expect to need one or two things, like a vitamin supplement, blender or protein powder, you need to look very closely at what the diet plan suggests or requires. If there’s a laundry list of supplements (manufactured or sold by the author), powders and potions, these are going to add up to a great deal of money. Can you really afford them? Are they really necessary to lose weight?
Likewise, if a weight loss diet plan requires you to buy pre-packaged meals, all organic produce or expensive grocery items every week, is this going to be financially feasible?
Many dieters have families to feed as well. If you have to buy a lot of special items just for your diet, rather than choosing from healthy foods the whole family can eat, you could as much as double or triple your monthly grocery costs. This needs to be a very real consideration as you shop for the best weight loss diet plan for you.
Is it Healthy for You?
All of the weight loss diet plans on the market claim to be healthy. But are they healthy for you? Is the calorie restriction so low that you will be hungry, fatigued and moody?
Is it so high in animal fats and proteins that your already high cholesterol will be worsened? Does it conflict with your diet-controlled Type 2 diabetes?
No two dieters are exactly alike. Everyone has different health issues, risks and concerns. A diet that ignores those concerns or even works against them is unhealthy and even dangerous. It also isn’t likely to help you lose weight, because you won’t be able to stay on it for very long.
There are some excellent weight loss diet plans available today. The ones that aren’t right for you may not be wrong, they’re just wrong for you. On the other hand, something that has a long list of testimonials may not work for you at all.
By asking yourself the above questions as you compare weight loss diet plans, you can make an informed decision and greatly improve your chances of weight loss success. You’ll also decrease your chances of throwing good money away on a plan that just wasn’t meant for you. It took you some time to gain that weight you’re trying to lose.
